During his state visit to the US in late November, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reiterated that India and China are not in direct competition as there is enough economic space for the two Asian giants to realise both countries' growth ambitions. The PM also went on to say that the growth model in India is likely to vary significantly from that of China's given that the former is a functioning democracy. We believe that Singh's comments intended to downplay the Indian impact of Beijing and Washington's recent relationship-building exercises.
