Despite ongoing criticism, murmurings of impeachment and efforts by the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to curtail his clout, President Musharraf continues to guard his position. Although he has accepted a number of constitutional amendments proposed by the PPP, he has categorically rejected any trimming of his powers saying, with a tinge of humour, that he does not wish to be reduced to a 'useless vegetable'. We do not expect Musharraf to be able fight this battle indefinitely and deem it quite likely that he relinquishes his role over the coming months, something which will jolt the US in particular..
