The pressure on the government is now mounting as the Karnataka state elections in May extended the Congress Party's losing trend ahead of the upcoming national elections, due in May 2009 at the latest. We view the victory of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as particularly significant as the party has previously been unable to expand its support base into southern India. This, and our anticipation that the government will remain under fire due to rising inflation, raises the prospects for a change of government in the upcoming national elections.
