As we go to print the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has announced that he and his PML-N party members will leave the newly elected government coalition due to the failure to reinstate the judges fired by President Musharraf last year. While we are not surprised by this turn of events - in view of the ongoing squabbling with their coalition partner, the Pakistan People's Party, over the fate of the judges - we see it as a bad omen that could presage further political turmoil. Indeed, the failure of the coalition to survive will likely serve pro-Musharraf parties and potentially stifle the policy-making machinery ahead.
