Vice president-elect Vincent Siew travelled to the Chinese island of Hainan on April 11 to attend a business forum, in what will be an initial gauge for the prospects of a rapprochement between the two Chinas. Siew stated that the main purpose of his trip was to discuss new business opportunities across the Taiwan Strait as Chairman of the Cross-Strait Common Market Foundation. Siew has attended the Boao forum in this function in recent years, but this year's meeting will have greater importance, given Siew's entry into the vice presidential office on May 20.
