Cambodia's fledgling export sector continues to make impressive strides forward, with export growth averaging 18.8% over the past five years, according to Asian Development Bank (ADB) figures. This has been in no small part due to the emergence of the garment and tourism sectors as competitive industries. However, due to a combination of relatively high oil prices and the fact that most of Cambodia's exports, especially garments, are reliant on imports, the trade deficit has in fact worsened in recent years.
