According to a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) watchdog, 1,790 party officials confessed to corruption in June. The officials were taking advantage of a month-long leniency offer that began on May 30. Corruption remains prevalent within the CCP, and is a major source of discontent among the Chinese population. Although it is not known what penalty the officials will face, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection has assured that corrupt officials who have not confessed would face 'severe punishment'.
