In July, state prosecutors filed a civil suit against former president Suharto, seeking to recover state funds which were allegedly misused by one of his charitable foundations. The Supersemar foundation, created to provide scholarships and education assistance for underprivileged students was, according to prosecutor Dachmer Munthe, going 'against the law by giving state money away outside the stated purpose.' Suharto resigned from the presidency in 1998, after 32 years in power, under pressure from civil unrest.
