Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh has called for an increased integration of the ASEAN economies and China on the back of a free trade agreement signed in 2005. Lao and Chinese officials met on May 14 and agreed to strengthen relations between the Lao People Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and the Communist Party of China. The LPRP has previously enjoyed close links with the Communist Party of Vietnam but now seems eager to expand its regional alliances.
