The government suspended new restrictions imposed on broadcasters, just three days after the controversial measures were introduced. On June 4, the government issued an ordinance giving authorities more power to shut down television stations breaking media rules and sharply increasing fines for violators. The initiative was met with fierce criticism, with opponents accusing the government of trying to the limit the freedom of the media, and the brevity of its existence has done little to reassure doubters of President Musharraf's administration.
