Sohn Hak-kyu, a former governor of Gyeonggi province, has announced that he will not compete in the August presidential primaries of the main opposition Grand National Party (GNP). Sohn has trailed the party's two frontrunners, former Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-bak and former party chairwoman Park Geun-hye in opinion polls, and is now expected to run as an independent candidate.
