New Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont declined to set a timeline for lifting martial law in Thailand, citing the need to consult the military junta first. Due to security concerns, Surayud said it could be some time before the situation is resolved, although they will 'consider the lifting of martial law as soon as possible'. The junta, which has promised democratic elections in October 2007, imposed martial law following the September 19 coup, and also banned public rallies and placed restrictions on the media. There is speculation that it will give the new cabinet a month to settle in before repealing
