Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has survived a no-confidence motion from opposition parties. His opponents cited the high unemployment and inflation that mean the poor are losing out despite Pakistan's impressive growth over the past few years. The opposition never stood a chance of winning a vote, with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League having the support of 200 of the 342-seat assembly, but the vote was important as a signal of opposition unity against President Pervez Musharraf ahead of next year's general election.
