Former rebels in the Indonesian province of Aceh will start handing in guns, in the first step of implementing a landmark peace deal, ending 30 years of civil war. The decommissioning of weapons owned by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) follows a deal with the government on August 15, to allow all GAM members to be released from prison, and given political amnesty by the government. The peace deal was eventually agreed after GAM gave up its demand for independence of the province, in a civil war that has lasted three decades, killing 15,000 people.
