The decision to extend Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest by just six months rather than the normal 12 suggests we may soon enter the most politically volatile part of Myanmar’s transition to democracy. The military needs to release Suu Kyi if it is to stand a chance of persuading the international community to support a transition on its terms.
