Discussions between Japan and South Korea to settle a dispute over their maritime economic zones ended with no agreement, although delegates agreed to meet again in September. This marks the first time in six years that the two countries have come together to resolve the issue, which dates back centuries. Tokyo and Seoul narrowly averted diplomatic confrontation in April, when Japan sent coast guard vessels to survey the area around disputed islands.
