Chinese Relations Harmed

Ongoing claims of abuse of Chinese tourists by Malaysian police, have led the Malaysian government to dispatch Home Minister Azmi Khalid to Beijing in an attempt to mend relations. The effects of these concerns have shown up clearly in tourism figures. Chinese tourists traveling to Malaysia fell by almost 50% from 2003 to 2004. The recent emergence of possible video evidence of an ethnic Chinese woman being abused by police have escalated the situatuion. With China becoming an ever more important trade partner, the Malaysian government will be hoping the Home Minister’s visit can allay the tensions.
