March 2011 | Ratings UpdateASEAN leaders are urging western nations to lift economic sanctions against Myanmar after the country's ruling military junta released opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in November. The US formally imposed economic sanctions on Myanmar in 1997, after the military junta denied the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party of a landslide victory in the 1990 general elections. Despite growing pressure on the US to lift economic sanctions on Myanmar, we believe the effort will be unsuccessful as it would amount to an admission of policy failure to isolate the junta.
