Zaid Ibrahim, formerly a senior politician of the opposition People's Justice Party (PKR), withdrew his candidacy from the party's deputy presidential race in November and resigned from all party posts. He claimed that his party's leadership 'actively condones malpractices and electoral fraud to achieve its designed objectives', after ballot papers that could be used to rig party election results were discovered. Such negative press has come at an inopportune time for the opposition, as it would only serve to strengthen the ruling BN's grip on the federal government.
