October 2010 | Risk Summary

Malaysia's 12th by-election since the March 2008 elections will be held for the Galas state seat in Kelantan in Malaysia following the death of its state assemblyman, Che Hashim Sulaiman of the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), on September 27. Che Hashim won the general election in March 2008 in a narrow victory over Saufi Deraman of the Barisan Nasional party by a majority of 646 votes. We believe that PAS will be able to retain the seat, although the risk of a surprise victory by its opponent UMNO should not be ignored.
