Marching For Wage Hikes

Around 52,000 people took part in the July 1 annual march for democracy, with demonstrators calling for universal suffrage and an end to functional constituencies. The turnout was reported to be weak owing to the recent decision by the Democratic Party (DP) to support a government-backed reform package. The march was led by labour unions, which are calling for a hike in the minimum wage. With the Chinese government recently relenting to worker demands for such wage hikes, we could see mounting pressure on the Hong Kong government to follow suit.
