NLD Dissolved

May 2010 | Risk Summary

The opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) was dissolved at midnight on May 6 for not meeting the deadline to re-register as a political party. The new election laws compelled the NLD to expel its leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, in order to re-register and contend in national elections, scheduled for H210. The laws also invalidated the 1990 poll results, in which the NLD achieved a landslide victory. We expect the parliamentary polls to lead to the election of leaders from the State Peace and Development Council regime.
