Executions Condemned

The European Union (EU) condemned Taiwan's decision to proceed with four prisoner executions on April 30 - the first on the island since 2005. The EU's foreign affairs representative, Catherine Ashton, described the island's actions as 'deplorable'. In response Taiwan's prime minister, Wu Den-yih, stated that the death penalty was acceptable to countries such as Japan and the US and argued that the four criminals had committed crimes so grave that they 'are even not tolerated by the gods'. We do not believe this development will have material impact on Taiwan's external relations.
