Organised Crime Poses Major Challenge

Organised crime is posing a growing challenge for the Chinese government. Gangsterism is becoming increasingly rife, and criminal groups are said to be spreading their influence into municipal and provincial administrations, effectively creating local mafia fiefs. One of the highest-profile cases being brought to courts at present concerns the city of Chongqing, where gangsters have been accused of robbery, extortion and corruption, assisted by renegade policemen. A failure to crack down on such practices would embolden corrupt officials and organised criminal groups, further corrupt local government, and undermine faith in public
