Insurgents Re-Arming
February 2010 | Risk SummaryThai authorities have stated that they seized more than 4mn metampethamine pills in January after insurgent groups in neighbouring Myanmar boosted drugs production to finance arms purchases in preparation of increased fighting with government forces. Insurgent groups based in the northeast of Myanmar have resisted government pressure to lay down their arms ahead of national elections to be held this year, most likely in H210, and are now preparing for an expected government offensive. We see a risk of heavy fighting between insurgents and government forces over the coming year.
