Opposition Triumphs In By-Elections
October 2009 | Ratings UpdateSouth Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP) won legislative by-elections in late October, defeating the ruling Grand National Party (GNP). DP candidates Lee Chan Yeol, Kim Young Hwan and Jong Bum Goo won three out of five available seats. The GNP now has a total of 169 seats in the 299-member National Assembly, while the DP possesses 86 seats. While the challenges facing President Lee Myung-bak and his administration are unlikely to disappear in the short term, we do not expect them to have a major impact on the political landscape in South Korea, as the ruling GNP still enjoys
