Harmony Makers Initiative Unlikely To Reduce Xinjiang Tensions
September 2009 | Political Risk AnalysisThe re-emergence of violence in Xinjiang following a spate of stabbings with syringes has reiterated the rising threat of political instability in China. Indeed, although Beijing's response to the renewed outbreak of violence appears to be fairly conciliatory, the reluctance to sack the region's party chief suggests that the authorities remain unwilling to compromise too much for fear of undermining the government's credibility. With this in mind, we highlight that the risk of further violence remains high.
