September 2009 | Ratings UpdateMinister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew intervened during a parliament session on August 19 to rebut an argument put forth by Nominated Member of Parliament Viswa Sadasivan. Viswa had lauded Singapore's success in maintaining racial harmony and had called for equal treatment of all races. However, Lee pointed out that Singapore's Constitution emphasised the government's role to protect the political, economic and educational interests of Malays (the indigenous people of Singapore). In particular, Article 152 of the Constitution states that the government must 'constantly care for the interests of the racial and religious minorities in Singapore. '
