Pro-Taliban Cleric Arrested
July 2009 | Risk SummaryIn late July the Pakistani police arrested the pro-Taliban cleric Sufi Muhammad, who brokered the peace deal between the government and militants in the Swat valley in February 2009. Although Muhammad is not thought to be in any direct control of armed militants himself, he is the father-in-law of the Swat Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah, who's whereabouts are still unknown. The information minister for the North West Frontier Province, Mian Iftikhar, said that the reason for the sudden arrest was that Muhammad had encouraged violence and terrorism.
