Ozawa's Resignation Could Boost DPJ Amid Tight Race
May 2009 | Political Risk AnalysisThe resignation of Ichiro Ozawa as head of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) on May 11 could give the party a much-needed boost ahead of general elections due by October. Ozawa has finally indicated his intention to resign as a result of a political funding scandal which surfaced in March, which led to the indictment of his aide, Takanari Okubo. Prosecutors allege that JPY21mn (US$216,000) worth of illegal donations were funnelled to his political funding organisation between 2003 and 2006.
