Mutiny Fallout Raises Questions About Political Stability
March 2009 | Political Risk AnalysisFollowing a two-day mutiny on February 25-26 by soldiers in the paramilitary outfit known as the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), the national army confirmed on March 3 that it had detained the alleged leaders of the uprising. Although the motives for the revolt appear to have been above all pecuniary, the episode is likely to have significant political and economic repercussions for Bangladesh, and could disrupt the delicate balance between the newly-elected civilian administration, led by the Awami League, and the historically powerful military establishment, which effectively ruled the country from the declaration of a state of emergency on January 22
