March 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe generous handouts in the recent budget and the setting of new electoral boundaries mean an election is going to be called within the next few months. And it appears that after more than a decade of walkovers for the government, this election may provide some interest. Singapore's opposition groups have agreed a pact to challenge the government in 57 of the 84 parliamentary seats. It is the first time since 1991 that over 50% of seats have been contested. The government can still expect a clear victory, but this is a positive development for a country often criticised for lacking political expression.
