Religious Freedom Tensions
February 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe debate over religious freedom in Malaysia has been brought to the fore in recent months by two events. The first is the claiming of Malaysian Everest climber, M. Moorthy, as a Muslim convert by the Sharia courts after his death. The second is the passing of a bill through the senate that would make it easier for men to take further wives. Both have attracted protest and have reignited the debate over the preferential position of Islam in Malaysia. The government has the difficult task of easing these tensions without losing the support of more traditional Muslims
