Tangible Progress In Aceh
February 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe government has produced draft legislation which would enable political parties in Aceh to come into being without maintaining a presence in the capital, Jakarta. The significance of the bill is that it is will facilitate the formation of parties by former rebel groups in Aceh, and their subsequent participation in local elections – intended for the first half of this year. The legislation is one of the key stages in the implementation of a peace agreement signed in August 2005. While it has not yet been approved by the parliament, it is expected to become law shortly.
