Renewed Concerns About Rule Of Law
September 2008 | Risk SummarySri Lanka's representative for Transparency International, J.C. Weliamuna, was targeted by unknown attackers on September 27, when a hand grenade was thrown at his home in Colombo. Although no one was injured, Weliamuna was badly shaken. The attack appears to reflect the deterioration of rule of law in Sri Lanka, and prompted condemnation by the US and EU, which both called for a full investigation into the incident. For their part, some 326 lawyers have signed a motion presented to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) noting that most of Weliamuna's work involved actions against the police and defence
