July 2008 | Risk SummaryGrowing extremism and militant activity in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) remain formidable challenges for the fledgling civilian administration. The ruling coalition still does not appear to have any firm national policy in place as to how to deal with this looming threat. Pressure from the US and NATO to take tougher action against militants launching attacks from Pakistan into Afghanistan has clearly been mounting and unilateral missions cannot be ruled out, as evidenced by recent US missile strikes against militants hiding within the Pakistani border.
