Human Rights Watch (HRW) has criticised Indonesia for failing to stand up for the Ahmadiyya sect, which has come under attack (physically and ideologically) from militant Islamic groups for its allegedly deviant beliefs. Ahmadis do not recognise the Prophet Mohammed as Islam's final prophet, and this has also earned it the ire of the Ulema Council, Indonesia's main Islamic authority. The government has not banned Ahmadiyya, but signed a decree on June 9 that urged members of the sect to stop proselytising or face arrest.
