Vietnam is now leading the way in Southeast Asia for the development of nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuels by announcing on May 15 that it is to construct two nuclear plants with a joint capacity of 4,000MW by 2020. The development of nuclear power has been a stated aim of the government since 2006 and Vietnam has gained support for this effort from France, Russia and the US, where local business interests have given Hanoi valuable allies. While this does not address immediate energy shortages, the admission of Hanoi into the nuclear family is yet more proof
