Bangkok Buck Rice Export Ban
April 2008 | Risk SummaryGovernment and industry officials reaffirmed the 8.75-9.00 mn tonnes export target on April 5, thus shedding fears among rice importers that Bangkok would follow the lead of Egypt, India and Vietnam to impose export bans on rice in order to boost domestic demand and take the heat of food price inflation. This has put a burner under the price of rice, which has more than doubled since the end of 2007 with Thai 100% Grade B White Rice now trading at levels above THB2,500 per kg.
