Government Targets Tourism Sector

BMI View: Data for tourist arrivals in January indicates that Singapore is on course to meet its annual target for this burgeoning industry. As the government seeks to enhance the services sector and shift away from the economy's reliance on manufacturing, we expect tourism, which generated 5.9% of GDP in 2007, to become increasingly important. The government's promotion of international events and its hotel expansion programme will heighten the city's attractiveness as a popular tourist destination in the region.
