UNSC Seat Boost For Diplomacy
February 2008 | Ratings UpdateOn January 1, Vietnam took up a seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), displaying Hanoi's intent to play a more prominent role in international affairs. The move signifies a considerable success for the Communist Party regime, which is still facing international criticism on its human rights record. We have, on the other hand, seen a considerable interest in engaging Vietnam by the US, which seeks to counter the growing might of China in East Asia. Key issues for Vietnam in its two-year term will be political conditions in Myanmar and Hanoi's own territorial disputes Beijing in the South
