Lee To Revise Defence Reform
January 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe incoming administration of Lee Myung-bak, elected President on December 19 2007, has expressed doubts about central points of his predecessor Roh Moo-hyun's defence policy. President Roh sought to take the first step to defuse military tension on the Korean peninsula by announcing a reduction in troop numbers and going ahead with the planned takeover of wartime controls of South Korean troops from the US military by 2012. Lee has now expressed doubts about both these initiatives, claiming that the so-called Defence Reform 2020 plan needs to be revised on the back of the continued threat posed by North Korea.
