Militants Freed
February 2008 | Risk SummaryThe Ministry of Home Affairs revealed that six Islamic militants had been freed between December and January. Five men were members of the al-Qaeda affiliated group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) while the other man had belonged to the Philippines' separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). However, the ministry stated that two further men have been placed under restriction orders for posing a 'potential terrorist threat.' Earlier in January, Canadian citizen Mohammed Mansour Jabarah, who was alleged by prosecutors to be a liasion between al-Qaeda and JI, was sentenced in the US to life imprisonment, after admitting plotting to bomb US embassies in Singapore and the Philippines.
