Foiled Coup Plot No Threat To Regime

June 2007 | Political Risk Alert

On June 4, US prosecutors arrested ten people in California on charges of plotting a violent overthrow of the Lao government. The arrested face charges of conspiracy and violations of the Neutrality Act, which forbids Americans to engage in military actions against countries with which the US is at peace. Thus, they risk being sentenced to life imprisonment. The detainees are, all but one, Laotian expatriates from the ethnic Hmong community who were recruited by the US to fight against the Vietnamese and Laotian communist forces during the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s.
