Anwar Ibrahim, a former deputy prime minister who was sacked in 1998 and went on to lead anti-government protests, has said he wants to lead a group of opposition parties in the next general election, in an attempt to reform Malaysian politics. Although an election is not due until 2009, many expect Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to go to the polls by the end of this year.
