Independent Candidates Point To Greater Political Pluralism
April 2007 | Political OutlookBMI View: Although Vietnam is still far from democratic rule, there are signs that the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) is allowing a higher degree of political diversification in the country. The latest indication of this was the news that the number of self-nominated and non-party candidates standing in the coming elections for the National Assembly on May 20 has reached 238. This is 3.7 times the number that ran in the last elections in 2002.
