February 2007 | Ratings UpdateIndonesia's top soldier, Air Marshal Djoko Suyanto, has revealed that the military has settled on a new doctrine which formally puts an end to its role in political affairs. After a meeting of top military officials in January, Suyanto announced that 'in the new doctrine, TNI is only a tool of the state in defence affairs… the armed forces are no longer a socio-political force.' This marks a dramatic shift away from the military's previous function when, during the reining years of autocrat Suharto, the military's powers enabled it to have its own faction in parliament, along with the authority
