Musharraf Paid A Visit

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates visited Islamabad in mid-February to meet with President Pervez Musharraf. The meeting was important, given the recent pressure on Musharraf to prevent the Taliban from operating on Pakistan's soil (see Potential Pitfall For President). Musharraf refuses to accept sole responsibility for the border, and Gates' visit appears to be an attempt at diplomacy. He promised that the US would not repeat its mistake of neglecting Afghanistan, like it did following the Soviet conflict, which allowed it to become a haven for Islamic
