The district court of Taiwan's Kaohsiung City has ordered that the votes from December's mayoral election must be recounted, upholding claims from the opposition Kuomintang (KMT)'s losing candidate, Huang Chun-ying, that the result should be declared invalid. On December 9, 2006, Chen Chu from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won the mayoral race by just 1,114 votes.
