Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has blamed 'groups that have lost political powers' or, more specifically, 'renegade army officers' loyal to the former prime minister who hoped to topple the interim government for Thailand's new year's eve bombings. The bombings have raised questions over the new administration's grip on power and, even if it was a one-off event, the political atmosphere is likely to remain tense for some time. This potentially complicates the outlook for the October elections, and this uncertainty has contributed to the downward revision of our short-term political risk rating to 55.0.
